An 8-module CPD training series for anyone working across commercial and industrial solar PV and battery energy storage projects, electricians, engineers, project managers, and asset managers. Each module is a standalone CPD course, so you can complete the full series or select the modules most relevant to your role.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course, but it is assumed that students have existing knowledge of grid-connected PV and battery energy storage systems. They may have completed a Grid-Connected PV or Battery Systems course, hold an SAA accreditation or have applicable industry experience across residential and commercial PV and battery systems.

Course Outline

This series takes you through the full lifecycle of a C&I solar PV and BESS project, from initial project framework through to commissioning and maintenance. Each module is a standalone CPD course, so you can complete the full series or select the modules most relevant to your role.

Training Outcome
On completion of each module, you’ll receive an SAA CPD certificate. Completing all 8 modules gives you 150 CPD points to maintain your SAA accreditation.

Students will receive access to the learning content via our training platform.

Required standards:

Students may require access to the current version of the following Australian Standards to supplement their learning:

  • AS/NZS 5139 – Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment
  • AS/NZS 4777.1 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters – Part 1: Installation requirements
  • AS/NZS 5033 – Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays
  • AS/NZS 3000 – Wiring Rules
  • AS/NZS 3008.1.1 – Electrical installations – Selection of cables

These standards can be purchased directly from the Standards Australia website, and may also be available from some libraries, institutions and industry associations. Please note that GSES cannot provide access to these standards.

Additional requirements:
  • A computer with a reliable internet connection
  • A scientific calculator
  • An email account that is checked regularly
Delivery Method and Duration

This course is delivered online at students’ own pace.

All modules are delivered online at your own pace and the whole series takes approximately 5 to 10 hours to complete, including assessments.

Courses are valid for twelve (12) months.

GSES has a team of tutors who mark the online work and as necessary supply feedback or additional technical information to the students. GSES’s tutors are also available to be contacted by phone during business hours or email.

Description

This course is designed for electricians who are accredited to design and install grid-connected photovoltaic systems and wish to further their skills to design and install grid-connected battery storage. The majority of the course is completed online; students can book the dates for their 3-day face-to-face practical after achieving a set proportion of the online work. Practical sessions are held regularly in Sydney and the current schedule can be found at this link. Note that dates are subject to minimum and maximum numbers, and places cannot be guaranteed until the necessary amount of online work is completed. Course access is valid for 12 months.

Prerequisites: Unrestricted electrical licence issued by an Australian state or territory, and competency in the following units of competency:

  • UEENEEK125A – Solve basic problems in photovoltaic energy apparatus
  • UEENEEK135A – Design grid connected photovoltaic power supply systems
  • UEENEEK148A – Install, configure and commission grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems

These units are considered as ‘required prior learning’ for this course.

Outcome of successful completion: Statement of Attainment for the following Units of Competency and eligible to apply for CEC Battery Storage Design and Install Accreditation (refer to the CEC for any additional requirements).

  • UEERE4001: Install, maintain and fault find battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems
  • UEERE5001: Design battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems

Required materials: Students are supplied with the publication Battery Storage Systems for Grid-Connected PV Systems 2nd Edition after enrolment at no additional cost. Students are responsible for obtaining current copies of the following Australian Standards, available for purchase from the SAI Global website or Techstreet website, and also available from some libraries, institutions and industry associations:

  • AS/NZS 5139 – Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment
  • AS/NZS 4777.1 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters – Part 1: Installation requirements
  • AS/NZS 5033 – Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays

Students will also require the following:
