Off-grid PV Systems (Including PV/Genset Hybrids) – Pacific Version

The self-paced online course covers all aspects of the design and installation (theory only) of off grid PV systems and PV/Fuel Generator Hybrid systems. It includes d.c and a.c coupled systems. It references relevant AS/NZS standards and industry best practice based on the various technical guidelines that GSES has developed for the Pacific Islands.

The delivery mode allows the students to complete the course in their own time with access to tutors via e-mail.

GSES will work with the student to identify possible solutions for undertaking a face-to-face practical training session.

This course is offered to people who want to be able to:

  • Design any sized off grid system from small 1 or 2 module d.c. only solar home systems comprising PV modules, solar controller and  battery only up to larger hybrid systems comprising PV array/Fuel Generator, batteries, solar controllers,  inverters (PV and battery) and associated equipment.
  • The theory of how the equipment is installed to meet relevant Australian standards and industry best practice.

This course includes a copy of the Stand Alone Power Systems Design and Installation 8th Australian Edition. The cost of the book is included in the course price, but postage/shipping costs are additional and calculated at checkout. An electronic copy of ‘SAPS Design Guidelines’ is included in the online course and your order completion email, so students can get started on the course straight away while waiting for the course book to be shipped.

Materials and Equipment

Students will also require the following:

  • Computer (preferred), mobile phone or tablet with an Internet connection
  • Scientific calculator
  • Email account, checked regularly
Delivery Method and Duration

This course is delivered online at students’ own pace. GSES has a team of tutors who mark the online work and as necessary supply feedback or additional technical information to the students. GSES’s tutors are also available to be contacted by email.

The course is expected to take between 100+ hours to complete, although this will vary between students. The length of time does depend on how much time a person studies the resource booklet and practices with the various exercises and worked examples provided.

Course access is valid for 12 months.

Cancellation and Refunds

Cancellation of online training courses will be subject to the following conditions:

  • Cancellation of online training courses made within fourteen (14) days of the date of payment AND before the online course has been accessed: the student will receive a full refund of the online course payment.
  • Cancellation more than fourteen (14) days after the date of payment OR after the online course has been accessed (whichever occurs first): the student will receive no refund.
  • All course refunds are exclusive of the price of the supplied course publication as advertised at the time of enrolment, unless the publication is returned to GSES in an undamaged and unused condition. GSES reserves the right to refuse a refund of the publication on the basis that goods are damaged or have been used prior to return.

GSES will work with the student to identify possible solutions for undertaking a practical hands-on installation session for training and assessment on the practical skills of the student in installing a system.

Online Quizzes

At the end of each section there is an online quiz. Each student is allowed four attempts at completing the quiz. The student must obtain 100% in each of these quizzes.

Design Task

A two part realistic design task culminates the student’s knowledge as a final project.

Training Outcome

After successfully completing the course the course attendees will be eligible to apply for provisional solar design Stand Alone PV Power systems Level 3 Hybrid -accreditation under the Pacific Solar Technician Accreditation Program which is co-managed by the Pacific Power Association and the Sustainable Energy Industry Association of Pacific Islands (SEIAPI).
