Continual Professional Development

Continual Professional Development Program

GSES ‘CPD Days’ are an excellent way to complete your CEC Continuous Professional Development needs in a single day. Each CPD day consists of three short courses: Updates to Australian Standards, Microsoft Excel for Solar Designers and Large Scale PV Systems. Note that all three short courses are combined and taught over 1 day of face to face training.

Training will be delivered in every capital city throughout Australia, as well as some regional areas (such as Cairns and Albury). In 2017 GSES is going to expand our list of training locations to include more regional areas, and so if you have a request for specific locations please let us know! You can always contact GSES with training suggestions at

Updates to Australian Standards – 35 CPD points

The year 2016 saw major changes to the Solar PV industry especially when it came to the new developments with the different standards. GSES, as part of its CPD program, is offering a course on updates to standards for the benefit of the industry. This course provides a practical interpretation of the changes to the standards.

This course will focus on the changes to the various standards:

  • AS/NZS 4777.1 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters – Part 1: Installation requirements
  • AS/NZS 4777.2 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters Part 2: Inverter requirements
  • AS/NZS 3000 – Electrical installations (known as the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules)
  • AS/NZS 5139 – Electrical Installations – Safety of battery systems for use in inverter energy systems
  • Amendment to AS/NZS 5033 – Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays

The course will also touch on changes in:

  • AS 4755.3.5-2016 – Demand response capabilities and supporting technologies for electrical products

After completing this course, the student will be eligible for 35 CPD points.

Microsoft Excel for Solar Designers – 30 CPD points

Microsoft Excel is a powerful engineering tool that allows users to perform complex and useful analysis and modelling of solar systems. This course will cover the tools in excel that will allow designers to conduct a performance and financial analysis of PV systems. This will include system design – matching array to the inverter; performing system yield calculations and performing a financial analysis on different sized systems. Students will develop a dynamic spread sheet that shows the effect of changing the size of a solar system on the payback period.

The following concepts will be taught and assessed during the training:

  • Entering mathematical functions and referencing
  • Common mathematical functions (SUM, AVERAGE, etc.)
  • IF, AND, OR statements
  • Auto filling columns
  • Built in formatting of data
  • Setting up a dynamic spread sheet
  • Graphing data sets and formatting

After completing this course, the student will be eligible for 30 CPD points.

Large Scale PV Systems – 50 CPD points

Large Scale PV Systems are becoming increasingly popular in Australia due to price competitiveness of PV systems. As per the Australian PV Institute, Australia has more than 300MW of large scale solar systems installed (100kW and above) and the numbers are set to increase by many times in the next 4-5 years.

The goal of this training program is to teach solar photovoltaic (PV) installers the skills necessary in the design and installation of large scale (100 kW and above) photovoltaic systems. The course focuses on the extra considerations brought forward by systems of this size – system layout, interconnection, system control and engineering.

After completing this course, the student will be eligible for 50 CPD points.
