Summary of experience Geoff Stapleton is a specialist in rural power systems- particularly off-grid power solutions. He originally specialised in Photovoltaics in the final year (1981) of his electrical engineering degree course at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He also holds an Australian electrician and electrical contractors license, a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, and is an accredited designer of Stand Alone and Hybrid Power Systems with the Clean Energy Council. Since 1989 he operated a renewable energy business (Southern Solar), specialising in the design and installation of stand alone power systems including PV, wind, micro hydro and diesel systems in rural New South Wales. In 1993 he was approached by a electricity distributor to act as a consultant and help develop a renewable energy business within the utility. This was undertaken from 1995 to 2000. In 1998 he formed Global Sustainable Energy Solutions (GSES) with 3 other RE specialists. GSES is a consultancy business operating within Australia and overseas. To see the detailed project list for GSES, please click here. In 1993 he was actively involved in helping the Australian Solar Industry develop RE training for technicians. Since that date he has been a member of the Australian Industry Association committee for Standards Training and Accreditation. He is the current chair of that committee. He has also been involved with developing Australian renewable energy standards such as AS4086, AS4509, AS5033 and AS4777. From 1993 onwards he has conducted training courses, seminars and workshops on a variety of RE topics including design, installation, sales, standards and business operations, in Australia and countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Ghana, India, China, the Phillipines, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. He has also been involved with projects in Fiji, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. In 2000 he was certified by the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP) as a Masters Trainer. He is also currently a part-time senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, School for Photovoltaics and Renewable Energy Engineering, where he lectures on grid connected photovoltaic systems, design and installation of stand alone power systems, and sustainable energy in developing countries.
